Чарли принимает участие в атаке и штурме вражеского окопа. Он вызывается добровольцем на задание и только затем понимает, что вряд ли сумеет отвертеться. Замаскировавшись под пень, Чарли медленно, напоминая пугало, передвигается по территории врага и успевает спасти от казни союзника. Затем Чарли находит укрытие в разрушенном доме, где живет молодая француженка. Появляются немцы, но Чарли разворачивает против них ими же принесенный пулемет. После этого он переодевается в немецкую форму и с помощью француженки и освобожденного им пленника захватывает машину кайзера ― и самого кайзера в придачу. Товарищи по оружию носят его на руках. Но все это был лишь сон: 2 товарища будят Чарли под навесом.► 63-я картина Чаплина и 2-й фильм из 8, снятых для студии «First Nationals». Это также 2-я 3-частевка в его карьере после Собачьей жизни, A Dog's Life. Чаплин семимильными шагами идет к постановке полнометражного фильма. К слову, в 1-м варианте, отвергнутом студией, фильм состоял из 5 частей (в 3-ю телепередачу из цикла Неизвестный Чаплин, Unknown Chaplin, 1983, Кевин Браунлоу включил эпизод, вырезанный из фильма: очень смешную сцену у врача с участием Алберта Остина). С той же невероятной смелостью, которую он позже продемонстрирует в Великом диктаторе, The Great Dictator, Чаплин осмеливается снять по горячим следам сатирическую бурлескную комедию об окопной жизни, полную волнующих моментов. Эта смелость привела публику в восторг, однако, если мысленно перенестись в то время, можно легко представить, что это случилось отнюдь не само собой. Едкая и разоблачительная интонация принадлежит комедии, чьей мишенью становится пошлое и вредное восхваление великой бойни начала века. Моничелли с другого ракурса ведет ту же атаку, что и Кубрик в Тропах славы, Paths of Glory, и тут его предтечей становится, конечно же, Чаплин, работавший по горячим следам (см. На плечо!, Shoulder Arms). Большую войну нельзя назвать картиной, удачной во всех отношениях; она слишком затянута, ей не хватает ритма, главные герои недостаточно выделяются из общей массы, поскольку их прошлое и характеры описаны недостаточно (хотя акценты и диалект воспроизведены очень тщательно). Или, быть может, наоборот: выделяются слишком сильно, ведь изначально Моничелли хотел снять фильм без главных героев. Его первоначальной целью было показать «безликую массу, из которой время от времени выдвигался на 1-й план какой-либо персонаж; один вызывал бы смех, другой - слезы, 3-й умирал бы, и т. д. Но в итоге я снял фильм, построенный на игре 2 актеров… Я надеялся, - говорит Моничелли, - что Сорди и Гассман растворятся среди прочих действующих лиц. Франсуа Марс писал в «Cahiers du cinema», № 87: «Ни один фильм, тем более бурлескный, не был до такой степени злободневен. Будучи безгранично ловким сценаристом (см. последовательное соединение и взаимопроникновение сцен в гетто и сцен досуга Хинкеля), Чаплин впервые придает звуку и, в особенности, диалогам ту же сатирическую остроту, что и видеоряду (см. знаменитую речь Хинкеля, составленную из выдуманных слов, совсем как финальная песня в Новых временах, Modern Times; см. также сцену, где Хинкель, протанцевав с супругой Напалони, грациозной как бегемотиха, осыпает ее комплиментами по нисходящей траектории: «Вы танцуете бесподобно… превосходно… очень хорошо… хорошо»). Как режиссер (в этом фильме нельзя сказать, что он не умеет двигать камеру) и как актер (чудесно играя двойную роль палача и жертвы) он достигает вершин своего таланта. Начав с отсылки к своим более ранним фильмам (к бурлескному обличению ужасов войны в На плечо!, Shoulder Arms) и закончив посланием, адресованным всему человечеству, Чаплин пытается освоить новую территорию для комедии и по-своему вмешаться в ход событий мировой истории.
